In the past, executives came up with a a detailed yearly and even strategic business plans. In today’s complex world such an individual approach doesn’t work any more. At the business design workshop you’ll design in small groups using extremely efficient design thinking methodology. This will enable us to design up to 30 business models in just one day. Yes, up to 30 business models in one day.
HOW WILL YOU DESIGN BUSINESS MODELS?
One of the testimonial from our workshops says that Business Model Canvas, Business Model Generation, start-ups are all the buzz words. Could be true. But we also believe that the days of static business planning are gone forever if there ever were those days in the first place. It was Dwight David Eisenhower, who said of his experience in the second World War that in the preparing for a battle, he had always found that plans are useless but planning is indispensable. The same goes for the Business Model Design Graz workshop.
A business that was depended on the design was always successful. Formal development of design thinking began in the USA in the eighty’s of the previous century, but we know that Bauhaus was influencing design profoundly and was founded as long back as in 1930’s.
Fast forward to the 21st century where it became clear that any organization can benefit from business design. Heather M. A. Fraser in her book explains that companies that view design thinking not as a one-shop vaccination, but rather as an ongoing fitness program will be better conditioned to stay ahead of the curve in a dynamic and increasingly competitive global marketplace. And Fraser concludes that as the marketplace evolves, the needs of the users evolve, and thus the business models must evolve. This is exactly what you’ll learn at the workshop, how to design new business models and be prepared up front for the future challenges of your company.
Three Gears of Business Design:
+ empathy & deep user understanding;
+ concept visualization & prototyping;
+ strategic business design. —Heather M. A. Fraser
At the workshop you’ll design business models using Business Model Canvas. Workshop in Graz will be in German so the Business Model Canvas will be in German too. Experienced from previous workshops has shown that it’s important that you have the Business Model Canvas in front of you all the time. So don’t expect to sit and listen, but rather to learn business model design by doing it on the Business Model Canvas in German.
LEARNING BY DOING ON THE FIRST DAY OF THE WORKSHOP
Tim Brown has mentioned in his book Change by Design three important pillars for successful new projects in the organizations: + workshops to raise awareness of design thinking; + prototyping; and + leadership programmes. In our Business Model Design Graz workshop you’ll learn on the first day of the workshop how to prototype your business models using structured design thinking approach.
Learning your new language of the business model design will take part in small groups. The more diverse these groups, the better. To every group a leader will be assigned, and every participant will have the opportunity to be a leader. You’ll have a very limited amount of time available to design your business models and even more limited time to present your business model prototypes. We will be warming up adequately, don’t worry. And we will have some time for the group feedback, but no general discussion will be facilitated at the workshop. Members of the groups will learn from experience what they are good at, and we will finish the business model prototyping of the first day with pitching one business model according to the criteria set by workshop facilitator. It’s going to be fun, you may trust us on that one.

There is no need for any special preparations for the workshop for you. If you’d like to practise in advance the use of the Business Model Canvas, please have only one thing in mind. Never write on the Business Model Canvas itself. You’ll find other suggestions on how to use the Canvas in the post What can you as a blogger learn from from business model innovation?.

If you’ll attend the MasterClass there is a great chance that you do have some experience already in business. You’ll get the opportunity to experiment with your business model at the MasterClass.
I’ve come to see business model innovation, not as a static process, but as a systemic, repeatable and reliable capability, one that leaders need to build, strengthen, and eventually turn into a sustainable competitive advantage. —A. G. Lafley, P&G
Mark W. Johnson wrote in his book Seizing the white space: Business Model innovation for growth and renewal that no one wants to depend on something as fickle as inspiration to create new business. We think, neither should you. Master the business design language and register today for the Workshop of the first day and the MasterClass on the second day of the Business Design Graz workshop.
