Learn the new language of the business (model) design in one day

Business models are changing. Faster than ever. If we don’t wish to be “netlixed”, we better start designing our new, innovative and alternative business models today. That’s we should invest in our most important capability, to learn the new language of the business model design. In only one day you could learn why never to write down on the Business Model Canvas itself, what is the backbone of our business models, and not least where the biggest opportunities of our business models are.

WHY ATTEND THE BUSINESS DESIGN WORKSHOP OR SEMINAR?

There is only one reason to attend the business model design seminar or workshop. To learn the new language of business design. Why do we need this new language?

By learning the new language of business design you’ll join numerous organisations of different sizes, across industries who realized that value is created by new business models design. In today’s complex world competing only on product and service innovation is simply not enough. For the business model innovation, you need to experiment with new business models, even those that might disrupt the current one, while at the same continuing to operate within the existing model. You need to design new business models and this is exactly what we’ll learn already in the first day of our business design training.

All change is linguistic. To change your business model, first change your language. —Tim Williams, marketing author

In the old days executives were trained to implement only one business model. Many of them did it for their entire career and then surpassed it to their successor. By learning the new language of business, we’re significantly reducing the risk of being “netflixed”.

WHY DESIGN MORE THAN ONE BUSINESS MODEL?

Today the majority of the business schools still teach their students to find a single right solution. Is that a problem? Yes, it is. As the field research from Tom Wujec has shown (video, 6:48 minutes), sometimes even children can build better structures of towers from spaghetti’s (and you can certainly imagine business models instead) as executives.

A longitudinal research has even shown that schools in general repress the divergent thinking. And we know (or should know) that divergent thinking is an essential capacity for creativity. While as many as 98 % of kindergarten children are considered to be a genius’ in divergent thinking, only 2 % of 25-years old were considered to be able to think divergently. Ken Robinson presented these findings in the speech at the TED conference and RSA has animated his speech on why we should change our educational paradigms.

By now, we should realise that there is no single one and only one right solution of our business models. At our workshops we are learning how to design new business models in only one day. We’re using rapid prototyping as one of the possible design thinking methods.

WHY CONNECTING BUSINESS MODEL INNOVATION WITH DESIGN THINKING?

By definition, design thinking is a productive combination of the analytical thinking and the intuitive thinking. In the business design training and seminar we are combining design thinking methods with the business model innovation imperatives.

Design as a problem-solving tool is a contact sport. To see if
design thinking can work for you, you must try it. —Jeanne Liedtka & Tim Ogilvie, authors of the book Designing for Growth

Saul Kaplan has argued extensively in his book The Business Model Innovation Factory that business model innovation is substantially different than product and capability innovation and requires unique platforms, tools and skills. Because business model innovation and design are team sports, we are designing business models in small groups where everybody will have a chance to present the group’s solution of the business model prototypes. Kaplan is convinced that design thinking is a key enabler of business model innovation. We are too and our numerous seminars only confirm that statement..

By the end of the first day you’ll learn why never to write down on the Business Model Canvas is the only rule in business model design. You’ll know that without the backbone of your business model, you have no business at all. And why the biggest immediate opportunities of our business models are in the continuous revenue streams.
