EU funding

European Commission has several different programmes that offer new investment opportunities to small and medium enterprises and other companies and organizations. Mainly it’s about the Horizon 2020 programmes. Calls with dates have been published for 2016 and 2017. The candidacy to these calls allows for grants in the amount of € 50,000, but also for co-financing of up to € 2.5 million. All these calls have one thing in common, the application form is usually a sort of a business plan.

FIRST EXAMPLE OF THE H2020 RESEARCH & INNOVATION CALL

Topic: Policy support for Industry 2020 in the circular economy
Deadline: January 21st, 2016
Type of action: Coordination and support action (CSA), 1 legal entity, 12-30 months typical duration, aim: accompanying measures (standardisation, dissemination, policy dialogues etc.), no research.

Short description: A re-industrialisation of Europe will have positive effects also in the context of the circular economy. New technologies help to make products, services, manufacturing and processing cleaner, safer, and more flexible in responding to customers’ needs; and they help to use materials and energy as efficiently as possible and to reduce waste and emissions. Europe has stringent legislation for clean industry, including rules to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and to foster energy efficiency. The more production is transferred back to Europe, the cleaner industry becomes.
Estimated EU contribution between 1,000,000 and 1.500.000 €, max. 18 months.
Our first comment: a very interesting call, where applicants will definitely need a hand of good subcontractors, to take into account “the future of work… and and social aspects as well as managers’ and consumer behaviour aspects”. The circular economy is arguably not your business model pattern yet, but it could become your key priority in the future. Since the call deadline is approaching fast, it should be undertaken immediately. In general, this call is more suitable for the production-oriented enterprises.

SECOND EXAMPLE OF THE H2020 RESEARCH & INNOVATION CALL

Topic: Business models for flexible and delocalised approaches for intensified processing
Deadline: January 21st, 2016
Type of action: CSA

Short description: Business models for flexible and delocalised approaches for intensified processing. To create a long-lasting competitive advantage for the European process industry it is also needed to properly inter-relate the production with modern and innovative ways of doing business. …

Therefore, technological innovation in sustainable manufacturing in the process industry needs to be matched with new business models, which may support industry and cross-sector clusters as well as industrial parks, while also allowing more flexible and delocalised operations. These new business models should be designed to address the barriers which have so far prevented regionally or locally adapted solutions, with an emphasis on technical but also non-technological barriers, such as legal, regulatory or cultural ones. …

In addition, these business models should consider the influence of industrial consumer trends on future energy and resource systems to achieve ambitious sustainability paths, which will be very relevant for the whole market.
Estimated EU contribution between 250,000 and 500,000 €.
Our first comment: from our point of view, certainly the most exciting call, our competences are best expressed here. Again, the call is more suitable for manufacturing / industrial oriented companies. Especially interesting for medium-sized enterprises, in the case of interest it is necessary to immediately commence work.

THIRD EXAMPLE OF THE H2020 RESEARCH & INNOVATION CALL

Instrument: Horizon 2020 dedicated Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises (SME) Instrument 2016-2017
Deadlines: several announced for 2016 and 2017, each call has two phases, usually four deadlines for each phase per year. In the first phase, application for the grant of up to 50,000 € for the feasibility study is possible. In the second phase (to which direct application is possible) you may apply for co-financing of up to 2.5 million €.
Type of action: SME Instrument, phase 1 up to six months, phase 2 between 1 and 2 years, aim: combination of demonstration activities (testing, prototyping, …), market replication…

Short description: very different calls, which have two common characteristics: + The firm must be an SME according to the EU criteria (+ number of employees, + ownership structure, + the annual turnover); and the company must have an appropriate Innovation Project’, with which it plans to apply for the call.
Estimated EU contribution grant of 50,000 € for Phase 1; up to 2.5 million € for phase 2 (70% co-financing).
Our first comment: the majority of our experiences is with these calls. In Phase 1, it is necessary to prepare the so-called mini business plan, of a maximum of 10 pages, in phase 2 it’s necessary to prepare a complete business plan of up to 30 pages. Documentation is not extensive in our opinion, but it should be noted that it is very difficult get this funds and the business plan must be developed on the top level.
